Title Design Research: (Drama) Ex Drummer

1.    How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? Which ones?

I counted eleven titles that were displayed ruing the opening sequences to the film. The first title that popped up was the name of the production company. At first I thought the characters were walking backwards. After a couple of moments I soon realized the whole opening scene was reversed. This was most certainly a different way then the standard opening scene. After the name of the production I saw the name of the studio. The next titles I saw were costume design, and music by. The actor names and the film title showed up and those were self explanator. The next titles were edited by, director, co-producer and produced by.

2.    What connotations do the images carry?

I am on edge when watching this. I feel like I am there with the characters engaging in these suspicious activities. The last couple of seconds of the opening scene got intense. One of the three main characters started physically harassing another character.

3.    How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

I can tell that the movie is bound to have a lot of things going on at once. By looking at how chaotic the two minutes are, it is only right to presume the rest of the movie is even more chaotic. The credits are embedded in the scenes with the actor's names written over their. Another place where the credits are embedded are where the signs reading the production companies are in the actual scene instead of being edited in.

4.    What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The main characters are of different backgrounds. Sure, they all speak Spanish, but one looks homeless, one looks young and up to date with the world's fashion and one is bald as well as old. The film-makers appeal to their target audience by having the audio in Spanish and subtitles in English.
